Childhood-Story:
1949-50 two, six week summers at Silver Pines Camp, 30 miles east of Redding
First summer I don't pay much attention to the Silver Belt Buckle competition.
We collect points for every kind of 'sporting' event over the summer.
We fish, swim, shoot, horse, clean, and big-points! = find an Indian Arrowhead.
Second summer,
I know I can win it if I find an arrowhead in the final days - our totals are posted.
There's a small small lake half a mile over the hill. I get permission to hike over.
Lost Lake is 100 yards long rock-stone shore the length - other side, banks.
I .hands-n-knees. back-n-forth . for three hot-dry hours.
This feeling of "I'm-gonna-find-it" has been with me since '38. I know it well.
Just have to keep on Truckin'.
Hour number four I find my no-doubt Indian Arrowhead.
Two and a half inches, brown-gray, shallow-notched-sculpted to it's point. Two times I lie face down and cry out loud at my camp:
Alone in the woods, stick-leader-fly-cool-mossy-creekside - my first fish
Alone in the rocks and stones with the Arrowhead
Walked and hunted for three hours today
Not one single picture taken
This has happened before
Like two days ago
It's always exercise
I hear:
... She's ballin' him right now ...
I hear:
... four years ago I woulda gone back and burned the house down.
Not anymore.
APPROPRIATION - my Buddy !
I know people who Wikipedia: appropriation
I hear:
Please don't touch. He is our friend.
I hear:
... if you act right now ...

1968 In the hallway at U.C.
Kitaj finds me in the hall with two big paintingsafter sitting-in for our graduate seminar.
"Best stuff I've seen on the west coast, Bill.
You know, the heroics of what you're doing was
accomplished by Kandinsky and Mondrian."By late '69 this makes sense to me too.
I get a camera and teach myself to walk and look and see.
1967 my home & painting studio on Mt Diablo

I hope that my sense of this life in the form of these pictures
turns out to be worth sharing.

Bill,
At this moment, 2 millions Americans are contracting covid every day.
This is the second highest peak of covid infections.
People over the age of 70 are especially vulnerable.
The latest post-omicron variants are considered more virulent.
Within two months, it's expected that 1 in 3 Americans will have
had a (new) covid infection.
Every covid infection and re-infection increases your chances of
contracting long covid. Long covid can affect almost all of the vital
functions of the human body.
The US government has ceased reporting covid data - because it
is criminally responsible for the failure to try to eliminate the disease.
Short term profits were chosen instead of an elimination policy.
This is post-political representation: i.e. they don't represent us.
I don't think you're going to get very far by
replacing politics with questions of morality
when I studied in Rochester the fascism that was trickling down came
from neoliberals, careerists, left postmodernists, garden variety jerks,
so-called feminists and queers ( word used in correct manner ) - who,
as members of the professional-managerial class, were unconcerned
about the people they step on, just making sure that the Reaganomics
did not keep them out of the club
that's why I focus on the similarities and affinities between
traditional fascism and anti-liberal, anti-Marxist postmodern
theories that are anti-Enlightenment and anti-universality,
wherein identity politics = cross-class collaboration in the
interest of upward mobility and anti-communism
this now includes: radical democracy, left populism, intersectionality,
decoloniality, critical race theory, privilege theory, afro-pessimism,
whiteness studies, and the like
this is the missing link in today's discussion: how we went from
civil rights within democracy to anti-universal power politics
( a.k.a. postmodern nihilism )
by the way,
Kant defined his ethics-aesthetics as anti-social sociability
that explains why Szarkofsky … liked you so much
FYI MJL
